This concludes the message “Unction to Function” - Ed.
“Where would you be if God took away all your Christian work? Too often it is our Christian work that is worshiped and not God. Oswald Chambers (1874 - 1917)
I had a visitation sometime in March 1991. The Lord showed me an interesting sight. Over the years I have seen it confirmed.
In the vision I saw a kettle filled with water and put on a stove. Now, the fellow who put the kettle on did so because he wanted the water to boil. The truth is that the person in question really did not know what to do for the water to boil. Suddenly a flame burst forth from the stove and the water started to boil. A hand I didn't see turned the control lever and the size of the flame rose or reduced depending on how the lever was turned. While wondering what this could mean, the Lord said to me, “The water in the kettle is the work of the ministry. The flame is the ministry of Helps. The hand turning the stove's lever is the leadership. Until the leaders know how to turn on the ministry of Helps, the work will not get done!”
The effects of this truth are immense. And since then, it has become both a mandate and a passionate burden for me to motivate church members to get involved in fulfilling God’s vision for their church families as handed down to their pastors.
Now, how many ministers and leaders could truly succeed at their divine mission without willing persons who will commit themselves to serve in that Call? You will have read from one of our past editions that a Call is not only to a church pulpit ministry.
In talking about the church family (and same goes for any person who’s a part of any work that as resulted from a Call of God, whether spiritual or secular), the members of each congregation have a divine duty to build and develop their own church family under the leadership of their own Pastor. This is what the bible refers to as the Helps Ministry. But while the church walls are not the limit of the operations of the Helps Ministry, it's the foundation of all other expressions of the Helps Ministry.
There is a true story told about a church and its Pastor.
“In the men's ministry years ago, a pastor had something wrong with his stomach and he had bowel problems all the time so by the time he's run
down the hallway to the bathroom, sometimes it was too late. He
went on a vacation one time, and when he got back he walked into his office and
there was another room. Some guys came in while he was gone and built him a
bathroom to help him so he wouldn't have to run down the hall.” According to Rev
Buddy Bell, the word H-E-L-P-S as 'Having Enough Loving People Serving.
I'm reminded of the church in Jerusalem. There was a crisis situation and the spiritual unity and atmosphere of the assembly was under attack. The bible states, “Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution.” Acts 6:1-2 NKJV
One primary reason disaffection results within a church assembly is when needs arise to which attention has not yet been given to. Now, this will happen from time to time as the church demography and members' status improve simply because leadership is made up of persons who are just as human as you. They are anointed but still human. They are not 'all knowing', neither can they handle every task.
Concerning service, if leadership could meet every need of every church members, then the Lord made a mistake when He inspired Paul to write that, “…God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. If they were all one member, where would the body be? But now there are many members, but one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." 1 Cor 12:18-22. NASU
