Did I hear you say, “I can rest in the
pew and dream of heaven. My Pastor is superhuman… he knows everything… can do everything.
After all he’s ‘anointed’. He’s perfect. He must
be an angel. And he’s ….” Bla bla bla…
When you closely
examine Acts 6:1-4, you see there a crisis situation in the Church at
Jerusalem, despite the revival and
daily addition to the membership that they were experiencing! The truth is,
revival and church growth also bring along potential for problems.
As revival rose in
Jerusalem, work load mounted and for once the anointed apostles of the Lamb
could not cope. They could be efficient in serving tables daily, except at the
expense of their primary call and God-given vision of prayer and the ministry
of the word of God. They called a meeting and told the congregation, “Folks, we need your
help with the daily ministrations and the serving of tables.”
Leaders
Need Helpers
Many leaders
struggle along and may end up frustrated because they never ask for help.
Asking for help is not a symptom of weakness. Rather it is a product of the
understanding of what you are expected to achieve and the acknowledgment that
you cannot do it alone.
One minster once told
his congregation, “I don’t care if you guys
don’t give. I
will give and God will bless me alone!” I guess he felt frustrated, but then frustration results from trying
to do alone what only many hands working together can do.
Sir / Madam,
regardless of the size of your congregation, there are people who will lend a
hand of support. You only need to present the problem and the solution needed.
If God commanded that assignment, he will definitely stir people up and set
situations in place to support you and ensure you fulfill the mandate. You
cannot do it alone! The apostles cried out, “We cannot be
effective as apostles if we want to be effective at serving tables. Someone
else needs to take care of this so we can effectively take care of that.
Someone once said to
me, “The helps
ministry was not instituted so that the leader can spend the time watching
television while the church members build the ministry.” If what you are
handling requires just you, then do it yourself. People usually know when
workload gets beyond one person’s capacity. Although they may not always come forward before you ask,
they will acknowledge it when you present the facts. You have been called, but
have not been commanded to do it all by yourself. In fact, in Exodus 18:17-18,
Jethro, Moses’
father-in-law said it was a suicidal work style.
Sometimes the help
you require is short term, other times it is long-term. It may also be
professional or financial or administrative. Let God guide you, and ask for
help ONLY as He directs. And when you get help, please be accountable to the
people. Never take people for granted. Appreciate them.
It was William James
who said, “The deepest
principle of human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” Little wonder
Voltaire concluded, “Appreciation is a wonderful thing: it makes what is excellent in
others belong to us as well.” ‘We did it’ is the language of
every great leader. ‘I built it’ is the boast of the narrow minded person.
