tVB 58: 1 THE MINISTRY OF HELPS: THE GREAT NEED OF GOD’S LEADERS

SOME YEARS AGO, WE WERE OUT inviting churches to a Church Worker’s training workshop. According to one of my associates, when one pastor got the invitation he said, “This must be another new revelation. Which one is ministry of helps again?”

I guess answering this most basic question is a very good place to start, but let me also lay a foundation by first defining ‘ministry’. Ministry is service.

SO, WHAT IS THE MINISTRY OF HELPS?

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, HELPS, administrations, varieties of tongues. 1 Cor 12:27-29 (emphasis mine)

The ministry of helps is God's system for facilitating the work of God on the earth through the Body of Christ, and specifically to provide AID, RELIEF and SUPPORT for those He has called.

HELPERS - THE GREAT NEED OF GOD'S LEADERS!

Johnny Mcmahon said, “Helps" ministry is very important and vital for the success of any ministry.” Not everyone will operate in leadership functions. A larger portion of church members will operate in support functions for the pastor.  The ministry or service or work of Helpers provides real and required functions for any work that God calls any man or woman to execute, especially in the local church, although the helps ministry also features prominently in the operations of Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists and Teachers.

In Numbers 11:13, when Moses found himself unable to handle the daily responsibility of caring for nation of Israel alone, The LORD told him, “Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them; bring them to the tabernacle of meeting, that they may stand there with you. Then I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you may not bear it yourself alone.” This was the enablement to put the Helps Ministry into action!

A minister once said, “Why should laymen and women always be helping the sent leader? Because God set it up that way! God did not set it up that I am the 'mighty mogul'. I'm not. We are all the same size. When we get to heaven, you in the ministry of helps will get the same reward that I'm going to get for being the ‘big’ preacher.”

There is a divine reason behind your membership in your home church. According to Johnny McMahon, “Some of us have not taken these types of ministries very seriously as those that make a real impact. Some of us have problems with equating the serving of tables with the healing of the sick that was going on in Acts 6. But had the apostles assumed the additional responsibility, there would have been a great hindrance and distraction in the move of God.”

DIVINELY POSITIONED AND EQUIPPED TO SUPPORT

Appointed leaders and church workers occupy a strategic position in God's plan for every local assembly. You may not look or feel so significant right now, but the truth is you are. And God has a special job for you! You do not have to be “called” into the five-fold ministry or become appointed as a leader before you begin helping your Pastor fulfil the divine assignment. If however you become appointed into leadership, then use your official platform and authority to better support your Pastor in fulfilling his calling.

I want you to know that God has already placed certain gifts within you to enable and empower you to be successful and effective in whatever duties you perform in support of your Pastor's God-given assignment.

This is God's design. Anyway you look at it, you are vital to the fulfilment of your Pastor's God-given vision!

HELPS MINISTRY TRAINING: YOU ARE NEEDED!

“And he told the crowd to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up toward heaven and blessed the food. Then he broke the bread and handed it to the disciples, and they gave it to the people.”   Matthew 14 v 19 (CEV) A little portion from VISION BUILDERS' “Understanding The Helps Ministry” Manual reads; “Had Jesus never appointed people to work with him, would we have anything left of the ministry of Jesus today? Had Paul never had men and women work with him, would we have had anything left of the ministry of Paul today?” It is amazing to us how this particular message, in both the manual and audio forms have blessed so many lives. After attending one of our seminars, this particular Pastor said to me, “Please come and tell my people 'You are important!' Everybody wants to know that he or she is important, and that they are vital for certain things to move smoothly. Even nature attests to this. Scientists say plants are sensitive...

tVB 40: 1 HELPS MINISTRY TRAINING: HOW TO BECOME AN EFFECTIVE CHURCH WORKER

Serving in the Helps Ministry is giving a hand of service towards the fulfillment of your Pastor's God-given vision. And being effective makes you relevant. It makes your leader consider a job "well done" just because it was committed to you. Through your service, a public image or impression is also created of your church family to the outside world . To be 'Effective' is to be, 'Efficient, able, capable…etc'. It is the definition of your results. Effective people impact the lives of others positively. It was the transportation that drove Joseph into political prominence in ancient Egypt. It is God's tool for touching and blessing others. However, effectiveness is a product of character and not a spiritual gift. Let's consider some qualities of an effective church worker. WALKS IN LOVE Practicing strife, hatred, jealousy, envy, murmuring, grumbling, complaining and every other vice is an exercise in self-reduction. Walking in love, however ...

tVB 33: 1 HELPS MINISTRY TRAINING: FULFILLING YOUR PASTOR’S VISION

Some years ago, I was invited to speak at a Church’s Worker's Training Programme. One of the questions during the interactive session was, 'How does a church member help the Pastor fulfill his God-given vision?' I would like to share  with you what some simple steps to fulfilling your Pastor's vision. Step 1: Understand the Pastoral Office The pastoral office is one of the leadership ministries appointed in the Body of Christ by the Lord Jesus in Ephesians 4. The Pastor is the chief administrator of the local assembly. According to Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, “He is the one who gets the blame when things go wrong.” God has made him (or her) responsible for the well being of the church community. This responsibility applies to both pioneer and supporting pastors. Step 2: Change 'the' Pastor into ' My Pastor' People go to great extents to personalize their gifts and property. Anyone Personalizing anything not given to him is labeled a thief. You nat...
